Solar Export Earnings Calculator

Estimate how much income your exported solar electricity could generate from your annual output, self-consumption and export tariff.

Your export estimate

Income from exported electricity only.

SEG estimate
Estimated annual export earnings
£342
2,280 kWh exported per year at £0.150/kWh.
Remember: self-consumed solar usually replaces electricity bought at the higher import rate, while exported solar earns the export tariff. The best balance depends on your household use and tariff.

How solar export earnings are calculated

The calculator separates electricity used in the home from the surplus sent to the grid.

1. Start with annual generation

Enter the expected or measured annual solar output in kilowatt-hours.

2. Subtract self-consumption

Electricity used directly in the home is not exported and therefore does not earn the export tariff.

3. Apply the export rate

The remaining exported electricity is multiplied by the rate paid for each kilowatt-hour.

A simple example

Using 3,800 kWh of annual generation, 40% self-consumption and an export rate of £0.15/kWh:

Exported electricity = 3,800 × (1 − 0.40) = 2,280 kWh
Annual earnings = 2,280 × £0.15 = £342

Solar export earnings FAQs

How much can I earn exporting solar electricity?

Your income depends on annual generation, the percentage used at home and the export tariff. Actual results vary by system output, household demand and supplier rate.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee is the UK framework under which eligible small-scale generators can be paid by participating licensed suppliers for electricity exported to the grid.

Does using more solar at home reduce export income?

Yes, because less electricity is exported. However, self-consumption may still be financially more valuable when the avoided import rate is higher than the export rate.
